Born With Five Legs, This Puppy Was Not Expected to Survive

When Ellery Max was born in Southern California, he looked like no other puppy in the litter. The tiny English bulldog had five legs, developmental problems and little expectation that he would survive his first few hours. But after a rescue worker agreed to take him in, Ellery began doing something no one expected: growing stronger. His fifth leg would eventually need to be removed, but that was only one chapter in the life of a puppy determined to keep going.

A Puppy Born With an Extra Leg

Ellery’s unusual condition was immediately obvious. He had been born with an additional leg attached to the rear of his body, a rare congenital abnormality that made his future uncertain.

The breeder did not believe she could provide the level of care the newborn would need and contacted a local shelter. From there, the call reached Laura Lee Labelle of The Labelle Foundation, a Southern California animal rescue organization.

Labelle’s answer was immediate. “Four legs, five legs, six legs. They’re all welcome here,” she said. But taking Ellery in was only the beginning.

No One Knew If He Would Survive

The newborn puppy arrived fragile and facing more than just an extra limb.

Ellery had developmental delays and struggled to take in formula. At one point, there were fears that he might survive only a few hours. Feeding him required patience and constant attention, with his foster carer repeatedly encouraging him to drink.

Even his development seemed to move at a different pace. Most puppies open their eyes at around 10 days old. Ellery did not open his until he was three weeks old.

Still, day by day, he remained alive. Then he began to grow.

The Puppy Who Refused to Stay Behind

As Ellery became stronger, his personality began to emerge.

He was affectionate, energetic and increasingly confident around other dogs. His foster home regularly welcomed rescue animals, and Ellery quickly became part of the household’s constantly changing pack.

The puppy who had once struggled simply to drink formula was now playing with larger dogs and greeting newcomers.

But there was still one problem.

As Ellery’s body continued growing, his fifth leg did not keep up. The limb eventually became a dangling appendage behind him, rubbing against his other legs and making movement more difficult. What had once been an extraordinary physical feature was becoming a real obstacle to his mobility.

Ellery Max was born with five legs and was not expected to survive for long. But after being rescued and undergoing surgery, the tiny bulldog kept fighting for the chance to live a normal life. Watch his incredible journey.

The Fifth Leg Had to Go

Eventually, the decision was made.

Ellery needed surgery.

The extra leg was removed, allowing him to move without the irritation and interference it had begun causing. The operation was successful, and after recovering, Ellery could finally run and play more freely.

For the people who had followed his story, it was a remarkable transformation.

The puppy who was not expected to survive had made it through his fragile first days. He had overcome developmental delays. Then he had undergone surgery to remove the leg that had made him famous.

And after all that, Ellery was finally getting the chance to do something very ordinary. Be a dog.

From a Medical Mystery to a Normal Dog

Ellery later moved to Road Dogs and Rescue, an organization experienced in finding homes for bulldogs with medical needs.

His story continued to spread, not simply because he had once been born with five legs, but because of what came afterward. Ellery grew into a playful, affectionate dog who loved people, other dogs and attention.

In January 2020, he reportedly found his forever home and was renamed Walter.

For a puppy once described as too fragile to have much chance of survival, it was an ending few people could have predicted.

Ellery Max was born with five legs, but that was never the most important part of his story. The extra limb was eventually removed. The developmental problems were overcome. What remained was a stubborn little bulldog who refused to let an extraordinary beginning define the rest of his life. Ellery was saved because someone looked past what was wrong with him and saw something worth fighting for. In the end, that made all the difference.
